Salmonwatch

Salmon runs on the Oregon Coast are one of the great natural events of the year. This program puts students right in the middle of it.

Salmonwatch runs during the fall salmon runs, when the fish themselves are the best teaching resource available. Students explore the behavior and life histories of Oregon's salmon species and study the fishing techniques connected to the physiological changes salmon go through as they move between saltwater and freshwater.

The science goes deeper from there. Students investigate the causes and effects of salinity and pH changes, study the hydrological features of river systems and how salmon use them, and complete a full dissection covering salmon anatomy and physiology. Culinary aspects round out the experience.

Topics are taught at the level of your group, from kindergarten through college.
