Fishing on Tillamook Bay is part of the culture here. This program brings students into that tradition and into the science behind it.
They learn the techniques used to fish the bottom, water column, and surface of the bay, and explore the behavior and life histories of the fish species they are likely to encounter.
Citizen science is built in through measuring and recording catch data. A fish dissection gives students a close look at anatomy and physiology, and an engineering activity on air bladders and buoyancy connects the biology of the fish to the physics of the water.
This program runs best in fall when fishing on the bay is at its most productive.
