Sea stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers. Four animals that look nothing alike and have more in common than your students might expect.
Students explore all four major echinoderm groups through live specimens in the Boathouse tidepool tanks. The program covers behavior and life history across each group, and includes a comparative dissection that puts them side by side so the similarities and differences become concrete and memorable.
Invasive species and their effects on the local ecosystem are also part of the conversation. Specimens live in tanks at the Boathouse, so this program is available any time of year and works well across a wide range of grade levels.
