Step into a coastal forest and start paying attention. There is more going on in there than most people realize.
Coastal Forestry, students visit a coastal forest and discover what lives there, how it grows, and how it changes over time. They identify and measure trees, calculating diameter, height, crown width, and volume. They take increment bores and read the growth history written inside a tree. And they work out how many trees it would take to build a house.
The program covers the interactions between climate, forest fires, insect infestations, and disease on timber stands over time, and students learn to assess fire risk in a forest stand. Hardwood versus softwood species, their growth patterns and uses, are explored throughout.
This program takes place off site and requires transportation arranged by the visiting group. Available year-round, dry weather preferred.
