Map and Compass / GPS

Navigate the site of a town swallowed by the sea.

Bayocean was a resort town on the Tillamook Coast that was swallowed by the sea. In this program, students use a compass and a GPS to locate the sites of its buildings, working from historical writings that describe where things once stood. They learn to navigate using both tools and use what they find to build their own map of the townsite.

It is a navigation and mapmaking program rooted in genuine local history, and one that tends to hold the attention of students who might not have expected to find it interesting.

Available year-round, dry weather preferred. This program takes place off site and requires transportation arranged by the visiting group.
