Coastal Geology

The rocks along this coastline have a story to tell. This program teaches students how to read it.

Students learn the geologic history of the Oregon Coast, the landforms it has produced, and the rock types associated with each origin. They visit sites in the area to see these landforms firsthand, collect rock samples, and bring them back to the Boathouse to identify, cut, and polish.

Every student gets to cut Oregon's state rock, the thunderegg, and work with the state gem, the sunstone. What begins as geology becomes something students can hold in their hands.

This program takes place partly off site and requires transportation arranged by the visiting group. Available year-round.
