Seaweeds don't get nearly the attention they deserve.
In this program, students discover the major seaweed groups found along the Oregon Coast and learn what each one contributes to the ecosystem around it. Working with freshly collected specimens, they examine, draw, and identify the seaweeds found in and around Tillamook Bay, tracing the life histories of each group and exploring the relationships between kelp forests and sea urchins.
The program includes a focused look at native versus invasive eelgrass communities, a topic that connects directly to what is happening in Tillamook Bay right now.
Specimens are collected fresh before each visit. The program is available any time of year, and topics are taught at the level of your group.
