This workshop offers an exciting opportunity to join the community historic preservation efforts of Oregon’s LAST intact 1930s era US Coast Guard Boathouse! In this historic setting, participants will learn about the history of the life-saving service and coast guard on Tillamook Bay, while honing their woodworking skills and learning the basics of small craft, stitch-and-glue construction.

This opportunity is made available by the Garibaldi Cultural Heritage Initiative (a 501c3 non-profit organization), the Port of Garibaldi, and a grant from Trust Management Services LLC. Through "Kayaks from Scratch", these partners are supporting historic preservation in the Tillamook Bay region, while providing youth and the community meaningful, hands-on opportunities to learn about Oregon's beautiful coastal watersheds, estuaries and maritime heritage.

This special event brings the community together to build boats at the historic boathouse that will be available for youth and adult water programs in the future.
In this week long, hands-on workshop we'll be building a fleet of Pygmy wooden kayaks. Professional boatbuilder Michael Bogoger will be leading the workshop; Michael has been building boats for decades and helps coordinate the annual family boat build at the Toledo Wooden Boat show. All tools will be provided; wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Epoxy fiberglass construction will be involved - if epoxy comes in contact with clothing it can cause permanent damage to the fabric or material. Class begins daily at 9am and runs to 5pm. Monday we'll kick off with a brief introduction and then get straight to work assembling the kits. All participants are invited to attend an open house on Saturday to celebrate the progress and invite friends or family to view your work!
Light lunch will be provided Mon-Fri, but feel free to bring your own lunch or snacks if you have special dietary restrictions or preferences. Parking is available in the gravel lot at the entrance to the Pier. Note: it is a 760' walk out to the boathouse; if we have rainy weather you'll want to bring a good raincoat - it can be a bit windy on the pier.
